Highlights
As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hope to avoid falling from an impressive 3-0 start to a concerning 3-2, they might need to battle the Seattle Seahawks without budding star running back Bucky Irving.
Irving, the Bucs’ second-year running back who rushed for 1,122 yards as a rookie, suffered a foot sprain in last Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Although the Buccaneers hadn’t announced Irving’s Week 5 status as of Friday morning, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that he’s expected to sit this weekend.
The more pressing concern, though, is that Irving is “in danger” of missing the Bucs’ Week 6 clash with the San Francisco 49ers. Rachaad White should see more playing time in Irving’s potential absence, and Fowler noted the Buccaneers could allow Josh Williams, an undrafted rookie out of LSU, to make his NFL debut.
It’s been a slow start for Irving, who has only recorded 237 yards and no touchdowns on 3.3 yards per attempt. However, he’s turned 19 receptions into 193 yards and two touchdowns for the NFC South-leading Buccaneers.
Luckily for the Buccaneers, White has gradually improved since entering the league as a 2022 third-round pick. He’s increased his yards per carry from 3.7 as a rookie to 4.7 on 23 carries thus far, and he’s added eight catches for 34 yards.
White has totaled 2,192 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in 54 games, and he finished 10 yards shy of a 1,000-yard campaign two years ago. He’s proven that he can handle starting, and he’s certainly worth picking up in fantasy.
The Buccaneers also have former Syracuse standout Sean Tucker on the active roster. Although Tucker posted 308 yards on 50 carries last year, he’s only had a two-yard carry on three offensive snaps. Tucker has mostly played special teams this year, and it’ll be interesting to see if his workload increases on Sunday afternoon.
Williams, a former walk-on at LSU, is more of a question mark. He rushed for 1,494 yards and 17 touchdowns on 4.1 yards per attempt over 60 games for the Tigers. Williams is also a capable receiving back, setting career-highs with 31 catches and 263 yards last year.

“While he can create for himself, there may be limitations on his ability to create the big play,” The Draft Network’s Keith Sanchez wrote in a scouting report this past spring. “This may relegate him to being viewed as a rotational piece of a running back committee and put a ceiling on what his [role] could be.”
Tampa does not have a running back on the practice squad.
FanDuel Sportsbook listed the Buccaneers as +3 road underdogs (+102, meaning a $100 bet would net a $202 payout) against the Seahawks.
