Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht revealed that Chris Godwin will likely miss the first month of the season due to his ongoing ankle recovery. Although the team avoided putting him on the PUP list, giving them flexibility to activate him early if needed, it seems they’re taking a cautious approach with their star wideout, who recently inked a hefty extension.
Via WDAE radio, Bucs GM Jason Licht says Chris Godwin’s return might be pushed back to October as he continues rehabbing from a fractured ankle. Initially, Week 2 was a potential target for him to return to practice. But a cautious approach is likely. If Godwin misses all of September, the passing game could take a hit. With Jalen McMillan also out for a while, Mike Evans and rookie Emeka Egbuka will likely shoulder more responsibility early on.
Bucs GM Licht commended Godwin’s rehab progress. Saying he’s currently being evaluated week-to-week. While his status will be closely watched, Godwin is likely headed for at least a few missed games, even with a smooth recovery.
The Buccaneers have taken a hit with injuries at the WR position. But, as mentioned, they still have Evans, Egbuka, Shepard and several young WRs to fill the void. Obviously we’d all like to see Godwin back as soon as possible. But not at the expense of further hampering his health.
