Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is entering the final season of the three-year deal he signed with the team in March 2024.
While speaking on The Drive with TKras, Jason Licht made it clear he envisions Mayfield continuing as the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback past the 2026 season.
“Baker is at the forefront of our mind at all times,” Licht stated. “All of our plans revolve around Baker. That’s something that we’ll get to at some point.”
Joel Glazer said earlier this offseason it wouldn’t “hurt at all to write that check” to lock up Baker Mayfield on what’s expected to be a pricey extension.
The Glazer family could allow Mayfield’s contract situation to carry through the entire 2026 season. At that point, the Buccaneers would have the option to retain his rights for 2027 using the franchise tag or let the 31-year-old enter free agency.
“I have had a lot of discussions with Baker about the team. We texted during the draft after some of the picks. I know he was excited about the players that we took. We have a great relationship. And listen, nobody here wants Baker to be playing for any other team, so I’ll just leave it at that.”
Licht is making it clear that Mayfield remains the organization’s preferred choice at quarterback for the foreseeable future.
Still, until a new deal is officially completed, questions will persist about whether the Buccaneers might be keeping their options open at the most important position in football.
