The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without three important starters for their Week 7 matchup. The team officially ruled out wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, offensive tackle Luke Goedeke and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. Their absences leave Tampa Bay without a leading receiving threat, a starting offensive tackle and a key defensive contributor.

Winfield’s absence continues a frustrating stretch for the veteran safety. Rick Stroud previously reported that Winfield was expected to miss two to four weeks with a rib fracture. He has now missed two games while recovering from the injury.

Emeka Egbuka’s Rookie Contract and Production

Egbuka, 24, committed to Ohio State as a five-star recruit. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2022 before receiving third-team recognition in each of the following two seasons.

Tampa Bay selected Egbuka 19th overall in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He is playing the second season of a four-year, $18,147,572 contract, including a $9,838,231 signing bonus. The deal also includes a fifth-year option the Buccaneers can exercise in 2028.

Through six games in 2026, Egbuka has recorded 28 receptions on 49 targets. He has totaled 240 receiving yards and two touchdowns, averaging 8.6 yards per reception.

Antoine Winfield Jr.’s Injury Keeps Him Sidelined

Winfield, 28, started four seasons at Minnesota and earned All-American honors in 2019. The Buccaneers selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft with the 45th overall pick.

Winfield completed the final season of his four-year, $7,307,182 rookie contract, which included a $2,874,314 signing bonus. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent before Tampa Bay applied the franchise tag worth $17.123 million, fully guaranteed.

The Buccaneers subsequently secured Winfield with a four-year, $84.1 million extension before the 2024 season. In 2026, he has appeared in four games and recorded 24 total tackles.

With Winfield and Egbuka unavailable alongside Goedeke, Tampa Bay faces another challenging week managing key absences. Their availability will remain an important storyline as the Buccaneers prepare for Sunday’s matchup.

Buccaneers vs Panthers Preview: Tampa Bay Faces a Critical NFC South Test

Buccaneers Expect Baker Mayfield to Start Against Panthers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers expect Baker Mayfield to return as their starting quarterback Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Mayfield missed three games after dislocating his right thumb during Tampa Bay’s Week 3 loss to Minnesota. Head coach Todd Bowles indicated Friday that Mayfield appeared ready after completing a full week of practice. Despite being listed as questionable, the veteran quarterback is expected to reclaim his starting role.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the latest development on Twitter, citing Bowles’ assessment of Mayfield’s readiness.

“Bucs HC Todd Bowles told reporters that Baker Mayfield ‘looks like he’s ready to go’ and he now is expected to start Sunday vs. the Panthers,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted on Twitter.

Specially Designed Glove Protects Mayfield’s Thumb

Mayfield’s return follows three full practices while wearing a specially reinforced glove on his throwing hand. The device features a solid plate along the back to help prevent his previously dislocated thumb from bending backward. Although the glove changes how he grips the football, Mayfield believes he can compete.

Developing the protective equipment reportedly required some outside-the-box thinking and assistance from the Tampa Bay Rays. The baseball team is in Milwaukee preparing to face the Brewers in the World Series. Despite that commitment, the Rays found time to help their fellow Tampa Bay sports franchise.

Mayfield had hoped to return for last week’s matchup against Pittsburgh. However, the Buccaneers gave him additional recovery time before he returned to game action. Tampa Bay eventually lost 26-19 in overtime after surrendering a fourth-quarter lead.

Buccaneers Need Mayfield to Steady the Offense

Mayfield’s anticipated return comes as Tampa Bay looks to regain offensive consistency. Before suffering the injury, he threw for 615 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions across three games. His absence put rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels in the starting lineup for the next three contests.

Daniels helped Tampa Bay defeat Dallas but threw five interceptions during his three starts. The experience provided valuable opportunities for the rookie, although the Buccaneers now expect Mayfield to lead the offense again. His familiarity with the system and experience in high-pressure situations could help restore stability.

Still, Mayfield’s thumb will remain a major storyline against Carolina. His ability to grip the football, maintain accuracy and regain his timing will be important in his first game back.

Buccaneers Face an Important NFC South Matchup

Tampa Bay heads to Carolina for a divisional contest that could influence its position in the NFC South. The Buccaneers need a strong performance, while the Panthers will try to take advantage of home-field conditions.

Mayfield’s expected return provides Tampa Bay with an experienced leader after three games without him. Now, the Buccaneers will look to their veteran quarterback to spark the offense and help them get back on track against Carolina.
