Buccaneers' Mike Evans considered signing with two other teams
Kim Klement Neitzel-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest moves for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2024 NFL offseason was re-signing wide receiver Mike Evans. His future with the team looked up in the air after a long-term agreement could not be reached ahead of the 2023 season.

Set to hit the free agent market, many analysts believed that Mike Evans could consider leaving for a massive payday. Given the boom the wide receiver market has experienced, the potential existed for him to price himself out of Tampa Bay.

Eventually, the two sides were able to find a sweet spot on a deal. The Buccaneers re-signed Evans on a two-year, $52 million deal.

It would be fair to say that a hometown discount was given to the organization. His motivation to remain in Tampa Bay had to help, as it is easy to imagine he could have earned at least as much as Calvin Ridley did on the open market.

While everything worked out well for the Buccaneers, Mike Evans did recently reveal that he considered leaving in free agency. Making an appearance on NFL Network and speaking to Sara Walsh and former Tampa Bay star Gerald McCoy, he revealed two teams were under consideration.

Had it not been the Buccaneers, Mike Evans would have landed with the Kansas City Chiefs or Houston Texans. His decision to remain in Tampa Bay led to each of those franchises moving in a different direction at wide receiver.

The Chiefs signed Marquise Brown to a one-year deal before selecting Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The Texans acquired Stefon Diggs in a trade with the Buffalo Bills to upgrade their playmakers around C.J. Stroud.

Buccaneers fans should be thanking Mike Evans’ wife for staying with the franchise. During the interview, he revealed that she played a major part in his decision to stay with the only team he has known as a pro.

He will return to Tampa Bay as a top target for Baker Mayfield alongside Chris Godwin. Evans will be looking to keep his incredible streak of 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career intact in 2024.

The streak currently sits at 10, as Mike Evans has been one of the most consistently productive players in the NFL for a decade.
