Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield takes shot at Astros

Even though it's been five years since the Astros sign-stealing scandal of 2017 and 2018, the controversy is still discussed by a host of disapproving MLB (and apparently NFL) players.

In 2020, MLB revealed the results of their investigation, deeming that Houston "used electronics to steal signs during its run to the 2017 World Series title and again in the 2018 season," according to an ESPN report. Then-manager A.J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow were suspended and fired, but no players were punished after commissioner Rob Manfred "granted them immunity as part of the league's investigation," per the report.

Mayfield, who was born in Austin, TX, signed with the Bucs in March and won the starting job over Kyle Trask during training camp. He had a solid performance in Tampa Bay's season-opening road victory against the Vikings, finishing 21-for-34 with 173 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, good for a 94.4 quarterback rating.

Mayfield's Texas Rangers are in a heated race with both the Astros and Seattle Mariners to capture the AL West crown. Houston enters Wednesday's action one game ahead of Texas and one and a half up on Seattle.
