The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Glazer family are pursuing major renovations for Raymond James Stadium, according to a report from Colleen Wright of the Tampa Bay Times.
The proposed project would cost roughly $1 billion. Half of that total would reportedly go toward adding a sun covering over the stadium. The Glazer family has proposed paying for one-third of the project, while public funding would cover the remaining cost.
The proposal arrives as another Tampa Bay franchise, the Tampa Bay Rays, continues pursuing a new stadium project in the area.
Modernizing Raymond James Stadium makes sense for both the Buccaneers and the Tampa Sports Authority. The stadium originally opened for the 1998 NFL season and has largely remained unchanged outside of smaller renovations completed in 2015 and 2018.
Beyond hosting Buccaneers games, Raymond James Stadium has also served as a venue for major concerts and other sporting events throughout its history.
One major question surrounding the proposed renovations is how much public money the Tampa Bay area would be willing to contribute while the Rays seek funding for their own stadium project.
According to Emma Behrmann of the Tampa Bay Business Journal, the Rays’ proposed stadium project near Hillsborough College’s Dale Mabry campus carries a projected cost of $2.3 billion. The Rays are reportedly offering to pay for half of that project.
Those negotiations could influence how much public funding becomes available for upgrades to Raymond James Stadium.
A similar project already underway around the NFL involves the Jacksonville Jaguars and EverBank Stadium.
The Jaguars are planning a complete stadium overhaul in 2027 with a targeted reopening in 2028. That renovation is projected to cost $1.4 billion, with the city of Jacksonville expected to cover roughly half of the expense.
The Buccaneers’ proposal falls within a similar financial range, making Jacksonville’s agreement a possible benchmark for Tampa Bay moving forward.
There is currently no official agreement or timeline for the Raymond James Stadium renovation project.
However, with Tampa Bay expected to pursue another Super Bowl after hosting in 2021, and with NFL franchises continuing to upgrade stadiums across the league, discussions regarding the future of Raymond James Stadium are expected to continue.
