Last weekend marked the end of when NFL teams were allowed to rework players' 2021 contracts. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers used that time to show some appreciation for veteran defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh.
According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Bucs reworked Suh's one-year deal so he is eligible to earn up to $1 million in incentives. The five-time Pro Bowler had to meet multiple conditions in the regular season to be eligible for postseason earnings, which included playing at least 65% of TB's defensive snaps and for the Bucs to improve their standing across the league in touchdowns on returns and recoveries, Yates explained.
The 12-year veteran is, indeed, coming off a season in which he logged 27 combined tackles (seven for loss), 13 quarterback hits and 6.0 sacks. The Bucs also finished the regular season tied for 11th in touchdowns on returns and recoveries, helping open the door for Suh's revamped deal.
After being part of the Super Bowl-winning Buccaneers team last year, Tampa Bay resigned Suh to a one-year contract worth $9 million.
The recent contract makeover is certainly a nice show of gratitude for Suh, who has shed his bad-boy image in recent years in favor of being a poster boy for fitness and better well-being. He also played a role in molding young nose tackle Vita Vea, who was also on the Super Bowl championship team.
Buccaneers teammates Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski also had their contracts reworked to pave the way for postseason incentives, dependent on if, or how far, Tampa Bay advances in the upcoming NFL playoffs.
