Buccaneers’ Todd Bowles Addresses Latest Baker Mayfield Contract Drama 

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has been vocal about his contract situation as of late, and head coach Todd Bowles can’t avoid it. Mayfield has one season left on his three-year, $100 million deal, and he wanted a new contract extension done before training camp. Bowles addressed Mayfield’s comments head on, albeit diplomatically. “I’ve heard a lot worse, so I don’t really have any thoughts on it as long as they’re doing their job and they come to work every day,” Bowles told reporters after practice on Friday. “If there are conversations that need to be had, we’ll have (them) as a team, and we understand that as well. So, we’re good.“ Bowles knows the drill too well in the NFL when it comes to contracts and player dynamics at training camp. He played in the league from 1986 to 1993, and he has been coaching in the league since 2000. Bowles has coached a few high-level quarterbacks along the way besides Mayfield. Previously, Bowles coached Tom Brady in 2002 and before that, it was former New York Jets quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Ryan Fitzpatrick, one of the bigger personalities in recent NFL history. As for Bowles’ own reaction to Mayfield’s position, the coach didn’t make too much of it. Bowles has been coaching Mayfield since 2023, when the former No. 3 pick of the Cleveland Browns signed as a free agent in Tampa and turned around his career. “I didn’t have a reaction. He had a few things to say. He said it,” Bowles said. “We were all about ball today, and we moved on.”

Mayfield showed it on the practice field by making impressive throws all over the place. That included a big throw to star wide receiver Emek Egbuka in double coverage, which got the crowd going at the AdventHealth Traning Center.
