Buccaneers’ Todd Bowles Faces Growing Pressure

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to Carolina this Sunday, sitting at 1-5 and facing mounting pressure. Much of the criticism has centered on head coach Todd Bowles and his leadership.

Via Yahoo Sports’ Matthew Kwitowski,

“Todd Bowles has been on the hot seat for a while, but now that his Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 1-5, his seat is on fire.” Kwitowski continued..”Bowles can’t be the only one at fault, as the team has dealt with injuries, including starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. Regardless, Bowles has shown time and time again that he’s not the man for the job.”

Bowles’ tenure has featured persistent struggles in close games and questions about his in-game decisions. Since becoming head coach in 2022, Tampa Bay has gone 19-24 in one-score games. Both of the Buccaneers’ playoff losses under Bowles also came in one-score contests.

The offense deserves its share of criticism for repeatedly failing to execute in crucial fourth-quarter situations. Turnovers have come from multiple quarterbacks and players, suggesting a broader problem rather than one individual’s mistakes. However, the recurring failures also raise questions about the coaching staff’s ability to prepare the team for high-pressure moments.

Tampa Bay’s Defensive Numbers Tell Two Different Stories

The Buccaneers’ defense has produced mixed results this season, despite ranking fifth in total defense. Tampa Bay is allowing fewer than 300 yards per game, ranking second against the run but just 20th against the pass. The defense also allows 23 points per game, placing it around the middle of the league.

The passing defense remains a significant concern, allowing 224 yards per game. Opponents are completing 66.5% of their passes against Tampa Bay, the fifth-highest completion rate allowed in the NFL.

That weakness reflects a longer-running trend under Bowles, who has served as the team’s defensive play caller. Tampa Bay has ranked among the league’s top five rushing defenses in six of the past seven seasons. Its pass defense, however, has finished outside the top 20 in six of Bowles’ seven seasons.

Bowles’ Defensive Philosophy and Late-Game Problems

The imbalance between Tampa Bay’s run defense and pass defense creates challenges when opponents fall behind or need late scoring drives. Teams increasingly rely on passing to erase deficits, putting additional pressure on defenses to cover effectively. The Buccaneers’ persistent struggles against the pass have made closing out games more difficult.

Bowles’ conservative tendencies have also drawn criticism as the NFL increasingly rewards aggressive play-calling on both sides of the ball. His decisions during critical situations have raised questions about whether his approach gives Tampa Bay the best chance to win. Those concerns become harder to dismiss when the same problems continue across multiple seasons.

Is Todd Bowles Running Out of Answers?

Bowles has not operated with unlimited resources or perfect circumstances, and injuries have affected Tampa Bay this season. Mayfield’s absence has complicated the offense, while other injuries have disrupted the lineup. Still, those challenges cannot explain every recurring problem.

During Bowles’ first four seasons, Tampa Bay recorded between eight and ten wins annually. The Buccaneers reached the playoffs three times, benefiting from favorable divisional circumstances along the way. Yet the team has struggled to establish consistent dominance, and its current 1-5 record has intensified scrutiny.

The issue is not that Bowles’ entire defense has failed. Tampa Bay’s strong overall yardage numbers and second-ranked rushing defense demonstrate that certain elements remain effective. The bigger concerns are pass coverage, late-game management, and an approach that often appears too conservative when the situation demands aggression.

Ultimately, Bowles must find answers quickly before Tampa Bay’s season slips further away. Sunday’s matchup against Carolina offers another opportunity to show that his staff can correct the recurring problems. If those issues persist, questions about his future will only grow louder.
