We are at the stage of the NFL offseason where things could be seen as getting a little slow, and this might be the case with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield at the center of an odd trade proposal.
The Pro Bowl quarterback has found a home in Tampa and has developed a strong connection with his team and the community during his two years with the team.
But many are still waiting to see Baker revert to the "Old Baker," despite his two seasons showing good progression.
Now we get to Bleacher Report's odd trade proposal.
The publication notes that the Buccaneers start poorly, and the Aaron Rodgers-led Pittsburgh Steelers or the Minnesota Vikings may trade for Mayfield, as their own quarterbacks are also struggling.
Right, before we go any further.
Why would Pittsburgh and Minnesota both want to trade for a quarterback who has played so badly that the team wants out? Plus, Mayfield is a free agent next season, so would both teams want to trade for him and also give him an extension?
The Vikings are giving up on young J.J. McCarthy?
And the Steelers are giving up on old Aaron Rodgers?
We doubt it.
Now onto the next bit here.
Say the Buccaneers do trade for Mayfield, what are they getting in return?
Would the franchise be OK with Kyle Trask or Michael Pratt taking over a team that has an abundance of weapons? We hardly think so. Where would the Buccaneers find an upgrade? Free agency? Nope.
This trade proposal is unusual and has numerous holes in it, making it difficult to envision a conceivable way for the Buccaneers to offload Mayfield mid-season.
So while this trade idea is based purely on Mayfield finally falling off a cliff, there isn't anything else to suggest what the franchise's next move would be.
As far as a Mayfield trade move, to quote Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, "Never say never, but never."
