With the final year of his rookie contract looming, Buccaneers cornerback Zyon McCollum is pushing for a long-term deal. As training camp approaches, Tampa Bay is reportedly willing to consider extending the young defensive back, keeping him anchored in their secondary for years to come.

Zyon McCollum’s rookie contract expires after this season, and he’s taking steps to secure his future. McCollum is meeting with the Buccaneers and agent Drew Rosenhaus to discuss a potential long-term extension

McCollum wrapped up a breakout 2024 season, building on his steady growth as a cornerback. He started all 17 games, notching 82 tackles, 17 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions. McCollum led the Buccaneers in pass breakups and interceptions, finishing second in tackles behind Lavonte David.

Zyon McCollum’s big break came in 2024, stepping into a starting role after backing up several cornerbacks. He shone with a 69.5 player grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking in the top 25% among cornerbacks.

Given McCollum’s impressive performance in 2024, where he excelled as a starter and showcased his skills with 82 tackles, 17 pass breakups, and two interceptions, the Buccaneers are likely to take his contract demands seriously. As the team looks to build around him in their secondary, McCollum’s role becomes increasingly vital, especially with Jamel Dean’s potential shift to a different position or role. With his agent Drew Rosenhaus already meeting with team officials to discuss a potential extension, it seems the Buccaneers are inclined to keep McCollum long-term.

In fact, considering his value to the team and his rising market worth – Over The Cap valued his 2024 season at $8 million – the Buccaneers might find it beneficial to secure McCollum’s services early, potentially using Jamel Dean’s $13 million per year contract as a reference point for negotiations.

The Buccaneers’ secondary is shaping up to be a force, thanks to Zyon McCollum’s steady rise.
Tampa Bay’s defensive backfield is loaded with talent and experience, led by stars Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jamel Dean. If health holds, this unit could be one of the league’s best.

McCollum flourished individually, but Buccaneers pass defense struggled, allowing the third-most passing yards per game. They ranked 10th in completion percentage allowed, partly due to opponents keeping pace with Tampa Bay’s high-powered offense. Coach Todd Bowles likely won’t be satisfied with those defensive numbers, despite the team’s 29-point average.
