The Bucs held their third practice in a row on Wednesday as the team continues its ramp-up to Saturday night’s preseason game against the Chiefs. It was another hot morning in Tampa Bay as temperatures steadily climbed with the sun beating down on the field at the AdventHealth Training Center.

Here were the latest studs and duds from Day 14 of training camp.

Studs From Day 14 Of Bucs Training Camp

RB Kenny Gainwell

Following a Tuesday camp practice that featured a more explosive Bucs run game, Kenny Gainwell was the running back who stood out most the following morning. Gainwell has started to settle in taking carries out of the backfield, but it is his receiving ability that continues to be the most impressive part about what he brings to the offense. He had a solid showing throughout practice whether as a ballcarrier or receiver. His biggest play was a catch down the left sideline that went for about 15-20 yards.

WR Ted Hurst

Ted Hurst made the most of his chances on Wednesday. With Chris Godwin Jr., Emeka Egbuka, and Jalen McMillan remaining out of practice, Hurst was the No.1 wide receiver by default. He sure looked the part with three big catches during practice. The theme throughout camp is the third-round pick looking “Mike-like” at times, and his first big catch of the day sure fit that description.

During the team’s red zone work, Hurst came across the middle of the field on a slant route with safety Antoine Winfield Jr. quickly closing in. As he came down with the football, Winfield upended him, tossing the 6-foot-4 wideout into the air. Despite the hard contact that made a loud audible pop, Hurst held onto it for one of the best catches all camp.

TE Bauer Sharp

In the words of quarterback Jake Browning, Bauer Sharp has made the “consistent” plays throughout camp and in the preseason opener against the Jets last week. Rather than going for the highlight moments, Sharp has maximized his opportunities by hauling in passes thrown his way. That happened throughout practice, with the sixth-round pick being more featured as Cade Otton remains out. His biggest play of the morning was getting a nice chunk of yardage on a crossing route.

DT Calijah Kancey (and his trash-talking ability)

Calijah Kancey is a fun addition to Wednesday’s studs and duds. Kancey was part of an entertaining moment during the team’s individual period with outside linebacker Rueben Bain Jr. Both were lined up on opposite hoops for a drill where they went around the hoop showcasing their bend and racing to finish first.

It appeared that Kancey won, and he was quick to start trash-talking Bain afterward, as the phrase “I beat your a--!” was repeated and heard loud and clear from 100 feet away. Just a little friendly competition and banter.

ILB Josiah Trotter

Josiah Trotter has made a positive impression and imprint in the inside linebacker room throughout the summer. Trotter’s latest showing included getting a sack where he came off the edge on a blitz and added another tackle for loss. Every indication so far is that his physical, downhill playstyle will transfer and fit into Todd Bowles’ defensive scheme this season.

CB Ayden Garnes

Ayden Garnes is easing the concerns about the Bucs cornerback depth with every practice. Garnes kept wide receiver Dennis Houston from getting any catches on him, which included a pass breakup on Houston in red zone work. With Benjamin Morrison not practicing and his availability being a large question mark, Garnes is making a strong case to not only make the team but get playing time sooner rather than later in his rookie season.

Duds From Day 14 Of Bucs Training Camp

WR Dennis Houston

As mentioned above, Dennis Houston had a problem catching passes with Ayden Garnes draped on him in coverage. Houston had extended run with the first team and plenty of practice reps as many of the team’s starting wide receivers did not suit up. Instead, he could not create enough separation to have a better morning.

RT Luke Goedeke

Luke Goedeke is an above-average right tackle along the offensive line, but he has been susceptible to Rueben Bain Jr. beating him in one-on-ones in camp.

Bain got the better of Goedeke early on Wednesday, bullying him on a rep to get into the backfield. The Goedeke-Bain battle has been one with plenty of give-and-take, but the advantage went to the first-round pick this time around.

S Antoine Winfield Jr.

Antoine Winfield Jr. did everything he could to knock the ball out from Ted Hurst on his incredible catch, but the fact is that Hurst still caught it on him. This is nitpicking a bit, but at the end of the day, Winfield allowed a touchdown catch on the play.
