Everything comes to an end at some point and some endings are more unfortunate than others. When the Cleveland Browns and then quarterback Baker Mayfield reached the playoffs in 2020, many wouldn’t have expected his tenure to end the way it did.

Mayfield recently made some interesting comments about the late part of his Browns’ career, as well as the short stint with the Carolina Panthers, where he was shipped for a late-round pick in the 2022 offseason.

“I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, said Mayfield on joining the Los Angeles Rams last season after being cut by the Panthers, via The New York Post. It was the first time I had fun playing football in a few years.”

Mayfield and the Browns defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card. It was Cleveland’s first time in the playoffs in nearly 20 years.

“It brought that feeling of having that success and really remembering what it was all about, kind of hit the reset button for me.”

The 2021 season didn’t go as planned, as the Browns went in the wrong direction as a franchise. Cleveland missed the playoffs with an 8-9 and Mayfield had a bad year, which led to the Browns making the move for a new quarterback in the form of Deshaun Watson. Early in the 2021 season, Mayfield went down with a torn labrum but opted to play through it. It was the start of a chain of events that ended his time in Cleveland.

Now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mayfield is going to have a chance to revive his career if he can beat out Kyle Trask in the quarterback competition.

The comments about not having fun the last few years are surely a stick toward Cleveland — a spot that his career will always be connected to — no matter where his time in the NFL takes him.
