This offseason has not been kind to diehard Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans. The team lost long-time wide receiver and fan favorite Mike Evans, who decided to leave and join the San Francisco 49ers.
The team could be at risk of losing one of its other key players, this time on the defensive side of the ball: linebacker Lavonte David. Over his 14-year career, David has recorded a total of 1,714 tackles, which ties him with Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks for the most in franchise history. However, he is currently contemplating retirement and has not yet made a decision.
Fox Sports' Greg Auman believes that David will retire this offseason rather than play another season in Tampa Bay under Todd Bowles.
"David, 36, could be retiring, having finished his 14th season tied with Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks for the Bucs' career tackles lead," Auman wrote. "This opens a subsection we'll call "ageless linebackers" — David was a step slower in 2025, but still led the team with 114 tackles, chipping in with 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pick. He's had an iconic run in Tampa and is only choosing between retiring and returning. To hear him talk on the podium after his final game, he sounded content to walk away with a prolific, memorable career."
If David ultimately decides to retire, it would mark the end of one of the most decorated defensive careers in Buccaneers history. For more than a decade, he has been the centerpiece of Tampa Bay’s linebacker corps and a leader in the locker room. His departure would leave a significant void in the middle of the defense, both in terms of production and leadership.
From a football perspective, losing David would force the Buccaneers to adjust their defensive identity under Bowles. Even in his 14th season, David remained highly productive, leading the team in tackles while still contributing impact plays in pass rush and coverage. Tampa Bay would likely need to rely on a combination of younger linebackers and potential offseason additions to fill the leadership and playmaking role David has held for years.
Looking ahead, David’s decision will be one of the most closely watched storylines of the Buccaneers’ offseason. If he chooses to return, Tampa Bay would once again have one of its most reliable defensive leaders anchoring the unit. If he retires, however, the franchise will officially turn the page on one of the greatest careers in team history as the Buccaneers prepare for offseason workouts later this spring in Tampa.
