What RB Keaton Mitchell addition does for Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have added another player to a crowded running back room. The move begs the question: Who among them will be on the roster Week 1 in September?

On Thursday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported former Baltimore Ravens backup RB Keaton Mitchell is signing a two-year deal with the Chargers for $9.25 million, including $5 million guaranteed. The deal can max out at $11.25 million.

Mitchell, an undrafted free agent, spent the past three seasons with the Ravens, rushing for 767 yards (6.3 yards per carry) and three touchdowns. His opportunities were limited while playing behind veteran running back Derrick Henry, who rushed for 1,595 yards last season.

Last offseason, the Chargers signed Najee Harris to be their No. 1 back, but he suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in September. Before last season, Harris had never missed a game in the NFL in four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Harris had four straight seasons of 1,000+ rushing yards with the Steelers, finishing 2024 with 1,043 yards and six rushing touchdowns.

Keaton Mitchell's addition crowds Chargers running back room

Mitchell will get a fresh start with the Chargers, who also have RBs Omarion Hampton (545 yards, four TDs in 2025) and Kimani Vidal (643 yards, three TDs). Hampton, a rookie last season, impressed before dealing with injuries.

With several backs competing for playing time, the Chargers will have decisions to make. Mitchell has standout speed and could wind up a weapon on special teams. With Baltimore, he had 22 kickoff returns last season.

The Chargers also have a new offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel, who should help energize an offense led by quarterback Justin Herbert. As Miami Dolphins head coach, McDaniel had the 12th-best rushing offense (120.2 YPG) in the NFL last season.

Despite his flaws in Miami (7-10 last season), McDaniel has a strong offensive mind. Paired with head coach Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers could have an even better offense (12th, 333.8 yards) next season.

But what will the running back room look like?
