When Josh Allen took the podium on Sunday, the Bills quarterback said he felt like he let his teammates down. Now after Sean McDermott's firing, the QB has to be feeling even worse about the team's inability to get the job done in Buffalo's 33-30 OT playoff loss.
The Bills decided to turn the page on the McDermott era less than 24 hours removed from their gutting three-point defeat. Ending another season falling short of their lofty Super Bowl expectations.
McDermott had led the franchise to the playoffs in all but one of his nine seasons and got them to the AFC Championship Game twice. However, the organization felt it was time to move on and one Bills defender is "sick" about it.
Among the first to immediately react to McDermott's dismissal was Bills defensive lineman Jordan Phillips, who seemed to be extremely disappointed in Buffalo's decision.
"This s—t here is so stupid honestly sickening," Phillips posted to his Instagram Story after news broke. "The best coach I’ve ever been around."
Phillips rejoined the Bills for a third stint in the middle of last season after spending a couple of games with the Dallas Cowboys. Phillips played in 11 games in 2025, however his year was cut short due to an ankle injury.
In a statement released by the team shortly after the move, Bills owner Terry Pegula thanked McDermott for changing the culture in Buffalo. But ultimately believes that it's time for the organization to take the next leap forward.
"Sean has done an admirable job of leading our football team for the past 9 seasons," Pegula said Monday. "But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level. We owe that to our players and to Bills Mafia."
"Sean helped change the mindset of this organization and was instrumental in the Bills becoming a perennial playoff team," the owner continued. "I respect all the work, loyalty and attention to detail he showed for this team and the community. I wish Sean, Jamie and his family all the best."

It's a tough decision but maybe not one that was unexpected given the circumstances. Whether or not it proves to be the right one remains to be seen, but it won't take long for Sean to find a job elsewhere in a wide open coaching cycle.
