Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has hit an early snag in his effort to trademark the nickname “Iceman.”
According to ESPN and USPTO records, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued an initial refusal of Williams’ application this week, citing a “likelihood of confusion” with an existing trademark.
Williams earned the “Iceman” nickname during the 2025 season for his calm, clutch performances in high-pressure situations. Earlier this year, he filed multiple trademark applications through Caleb Williams Holding Inc. to use the name on clothing, athletic gear, sporting goods, water bottles, posters, and entertainment services.
The USPTO determined that “Iceman” is too similar to a trademark held by LaCrosse Footwear since 1988 for its line of insulated boots and related products. Because Williams’ application also covers apparel and merchandise, the office believes consumers could confuse the two.
It’s important to note that this is only an initial refusal. Williams and his team can respond and attempt to overcome the objection. It is not a final denial. Whether Williams wants to continue pursuing the trademark is up to him.
