Caleb Williams did not enjoy the outing he would have hoped to start the new NFL season with after the Chicago Bears fell to the Minnesota Vikings with a late fourth-quarter collapse.
The beginning of the Ben Johnson era at the Chicago Bears looked to have gotten off to a good start, before JJ McCarthy stunned the onlooking Bears crowd on debut.
As debuts go, McCarthy’s one with the Vikings against Williams and the Bears was pretty good, despite three quarters of some very poor football.
The quality of the Minnesota Vikings‘ football that evening doesn’t necessarily matter when considering who is now 1-0 and 0-1.
Caleb Williams’ performance drew some praise early on, but as the game developed, it became apparent there was still a large amount of room for improvement. Dan Orlovsky has explained what he should prioritize as the Bears face the Detroit Lions this weekend.
Ahead of the new season, there has been plenty of talk about Caleb Williams’ alignment affecting his throwing, what he needs to adjust, and so on.
What Dan Orlovsky noticed most of all with Williams was that his eyes were not in sync with his body movements. The Vikings’ defensive line will have had some impact, but not all of it.
Speaking on ESPN, Orlovsky said: “His body has to catch up with his eyes, and that’s something that stood out on Monday night against the Vikings, his eyes were so hurried.
“He’s playing catch-up, trying to get himself in position to throw, and that’s something he struggled with.”

After showing three clips of Williams scrambling or looking to get the ball out far quicker than he needs to, Orlovsky added, “The lower half [of his body] isn’t connected to his upper half.
“I think this has a little bit to do with the young player, new offense, trying to do the right thing. But you want to make sure that his eyes slow down a little bit, play fast, not hurried.
“Then the lower half has got to be in sync with it. That’s something for Bears fans to pay attention to this weekend.”
Colin Cowherd’s The Herd podcast episode with Tom Brady was one that all NFL fans should listen to, purely from an educational standpoint.
Brady discusses the development of quarterbacks in the league while on the topic of Caleb Williams, and how the necessary knowledge required is not often taught.
He referred to how Bill Belichick, a defensive-minded head coach, taught him everything he needed to know about defensive reads as he developed at the New England Patriots, and they went from there.

Six Super Bowls later, it seemed to have worked fairly well for them. Caleb Williams has Ben Johnson to guide him now, one of the best offensive minds in the league, but he’ll need more.
Johnson worked with Williams incredibly hard in the offseason, and he has admitted it is likely Williams won’t hit his ceiling in their first year working together.
What that requires, however, is a lot of patience and trust from the fans that Ryan Poles selected the right quarterback going forward.
