Cam Skattebo entered the 2026 season expected to lead the New York Giants’ backfield, but things took an awkward turn in Week 6. After starting the team’s first five games, the running back was left without a single carry in a 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Skattebo’s reduced role followed a costly fumble in overtime of the Giants’ Week 5 tie against the Washington Commanders. It was his fourth fumble of the season, and coach John Harbaugh responded by spreading the workload among the team’s other running backs. Veteran Najee Harris received the starting nod against New Orleans, but managed just two yards on four carries.
Two days after the defeat, the Giants released Harris, who had publicly expressed frustration with the team’s running back rotation. The move added another twist to New York’s unsettled backfield ahead of its Week 7 game with the Houston Texans.
Skattebo made his feelings clear about the Giants’ decision, viewing Harris’ release as a message to everyone on the roster.
“Nobody is safe. It’s as simple as that,” Skattebo said. “When we go on the field and we perform, if we’re not performing, we know that there’s a possibility of not being here. And if I don’t perform, I know there’s a possibility of me not being here” (via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan).

The second-year back understands that his own position is far from secure after his recent mistake and subsequent loss of playing time. Although Harris is gone, Skattebo will still need to prove he deserves a leading role, with Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary also competing for opportunities.
Harbaugh has made it clear that no running back has established himself as the unquestioned starter. Speaking after the Saints game, the Giants coach told reporters that he wants someone to take control of the job.
“One of those guys needs to step up,” Harbaugh said. “Somebody needs to step up and be the back. And none of those guys have done that yet.”
Skattebo will have an opportunity to respond when the Giants visit the Houston Texans on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Fox.
