Can The Dolphins Continue To Show Improvement?

The Miami Dolphins are back in action today, taking on the Cincinnati Bengals, and we need to see progress in two key areas: the defense needs to keep building momentum, and the offense needs to find another gear.

Let’s start with the defense. We’ve talked about the importance of this unit improving, playing with more discipline, tackling better, and finding ways to make life difficult for opposing quarterbacks. That progress needs to continue today. Cincinnati has the offensive weapons to punish you if you’re out of position or make mistakes, so Miami needs to play aggressively, communicate well, and make the Bengals earn every yard. We need a defense that can get off the field on third down, create pressure, and make the big stops when the game is on the line.

But here’s the other side of the equation: the offense has to pick up the pace. We need to see more consistency, better rhythm, and the ability to sustain drives. Malik Willis has to put a solid game on tape, and today is a big opportunity to do so.  The Bengals come in as the 22nd-ranked defense overall, 26th against the pass, and 8th against the run.  The offense needs to establish itself early, move the chains, capitalize on scoring opportunities, and put points on the board. Explosive plays are great, but avoiding empty possessions and finishing drives are just as important.  Malik has a chance to get the air game going against a poor Bengals pass defense.

That’s what makes today’s game so interesting. We don’t necessarily need Miami to be perfect, but we do need to see this team taking steps forward. The defense needs to keep improving, and the offense needs to show that it can keep up its end of the bargain.

At some point, improvement has to translate into a complete team performance. Today against Cincinnati is another opportunity for Miami to show us that it’s moving in the right direction. Let’s see if the Dolphins can put together four quarters of complementary football and give this fan base something to feel good about heading into the bye week!
