Second-year wide receiver Jacob Copeland spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. He spent two short stints on the team’s practice squad but was never elevated to the active roster. When the Steelers brought him in last year, he was no stranger to the Steelers top brass.
The Steelers scouted Copeland in the pre-draft process at the East-West Shrine Bowl and his Maryland pro day, where he turned in an excellent Relative Athletic Score of 8.19, showing excellent straight-line speed with a 4.42-second 40-yard dash, great explosiveness with a 10-foot-7 broad jump but below-average agility with just a 4.47-second short shuttle.
Regardless, the Steelers liked him enough to bring him in once they had the chance to. Now with a full offseason inside of the building, Copeland looks to make a name for himself.
In college, Copeland was never the do-it-all type of wide receiver but managed to produce on a consistent level in two of the top collegiate conferences, the Big Ten and the SEC. He finished his collegiate career with 112 receptions, 1,742 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns.
When the Steelers added multiple veteran wide receivers this offseason, it placed a big roadblock in Copeland’s path to the 53-man roster. As the team will likely roster five receivers on the 53-man roster, Copeland is on the outside looking in.
Guys like George Pickens, Calvin Austin, Quez Watkins, Roman Wilson and Jefferson are considered as the frontrunners for roster spots. This leaves very little wiggle room for a guy like Copeland to make the roster let alone the practice squad but given his circumstances, Copeland is likely fighting for a spot on the team’s practice squad once again in 2024.
Regardless, Copeland should receiver many chances to showcase his talents in his first preseason with the Steelers when camp opens later this week. If he fails to crack the 53-man roster, Copeland is a top candidate to return to the practice squad. He will join guys like Duece Watts, Scotty Miller and Marquez Callaway as fringe roster guys that are all fighting for one or two spots on the Steelers practice squad.

Acquired: The Steelers originally signed Jacob Copeland to their practice squad on Nov. 28, 2023. He was with the team on two separate occasions before the Kansas City Chiefs signed him to their practice squad.
Last Season: Jacob Copeland signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent last spring, but was waived at the start of training camp on Aug. 2, 2023. He then signed with the Minnesota Vikings, but was released on cut-down day on Aug. 29, 2023.
Copeland first joined the Steelers practice squad on Sept. 12, 2023 and remained there through Oct. 3. He then came back to the practice squad on Nov. 28 and was released on Dec. 4. He then signed a future contract with Kansas City for 2024 in January, but was released on May 4, 2024.

College: Jacob Copeland spent the first four seasons of his collegiate football career at the University of Florida. Copeland left high school as a top recruit and participated in the Under Armour All American High School All-Star game. Florida redshirted Copeland during his freshman season. He did appear in three games for the Gators in 2018 though. He did haul in one reception for 16 yards on the season.
In 2019, Copeland appeared in all 13 games, with time at wide receiver and on special teams. He finished the season with 21 receptions for 273 yards and two touchdowns. He followed that up with a relatively similar junior season.
In 2021, Copeland had a career-high 41 receptions for 642 yards and four touchdowns for the Gators. He transferred to Maryland following his redshirt junior season.
At Maryland, Copeland played in 12 games and hauled in 26 passes for 376 yards and two touchdowns. Overall, through his five years in college, Copeland played in 52 games, hauling in 112 receptions, 1,742 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns.

Salary cap and future: The Steelers signed Jacob Copeland to a one-year contract this offseason as a “street” free agent. If he makes the team, Copeland will cost $795,000 against the team’s 2024 cap space. With none of Copeland’s contract being guaranteed, if the Steelers decided to cut him, they would not face any dead money penalties.

Kirk Cousins makes notable leadership move after Falcons practice
Kirk Cousins might be relegated to the job of backup quarterback, but he is showing veteran leadership to his Atlanta Falcons teammates. Following Sunday's practice, Cousins pulled aside rookie defensive end James Pearce to encourage the first-round pick after his fourth practice in the league at Flowery Branch, Georgia. "QB Kirk Cousins pulled aside Pearce after practice to compliment him on a pass batted down," wrote Marc Raimondi of ESPN. Cousins reportedly had a solid day of practice on Sunday, going 7-of-12 passing against the first-team unit. If Cousins wants out of Atlanta, he's not showing it at practice. The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback is competing on the field and being a good teammate around the facility. Cousins' actions on the field backed up what Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot praised Cousins for before the team's practice on Sunday. “Outside, it's a lot more of a deal than it is in the building,” Fontenot said to the media about the idea of friction between the Falcons and Cousins, per video from D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “He shows up, he does his job, just like anybody ... We've gotta build the best 70-man roster so we can go win games. "That's what we're focused on, and Kirk, just like all the other players, is focused on coming in here and doing their job. That's what he's been doing." Fontenot didn't dismiss the idea that Atlanta would trade Cousins before the season. He said the Falcons will do whatever it takes to make the team better, but stressed that Cousins has been a professional throughout the process of being replaced by Michael Penix Jr., a first-round pick from the 2024 draft. “In terms of making moves, whether it's trades or acquiring players, we're always looking at those factors," Fontenot said. "We're gonna do whatever we can do to make this team the best it can possibly be. But he's been a great professional, and he's handled himself well.” Cousins is coming to work in a manner that will make another owner want to take a chance on the veteran quarterback. That could be one of his best-selling points before he plays in his 13th season in the league.

After how poorly he played defense and how tired he looked against Minnesota in the playoffs, it has been their top priority. Doncic has never been the most fit player in the league. The Lakers would be thrilled if Doncic were able to stay this fit all year long. He needs to be able to play better defense now that he is the face of the franchise, and that could be abetted by improved lateral quickness. A big reason why the Lakers lost to the Timberwolves in the playoffs is because of their inability to stop guards from penetrating the paint. The starting backcourt is not a good defensive one. Doncic isn't the only one to blame for poor perimeter defense. Austin Reaves isn't the best defender, either. The difference with him is that he at least tries to be in the right spot on defense. At times against the Wolves, he was too tired to actually stay in front of some of the players who were attacking him. A large part of Minnesota's game plan was to get Doncic switched on to Anthony Edwards. Based on this video, he has a renewed commitment to doing that. Doncic likely has extra motivation to show the Dallas Mavericks what they decided to trade away. He wants to prove them wrong for deciding to get rid of him. After he was traded to the Lakers, Doncic averaged 28.2 points per game, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game. He shot 43.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. New suitor emerges for Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez
The Arizona Diamondbacks have plenty of suitors for third baseman Eugenio Suarez. A new team has reportedly entered the market for his services. Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the Phillies have reached out regarding Suarez. While Lauber did not provide any indication as to whether or not those talks have gained traction, the Phillies are an intriguing suitor for the Diamondbacks' third baseman. The Phillies' interest may be a recent development. Jon Heyman of the New York Post speculated on Friday that the Phillies could emerge as a suitor in the wake of third baseman Alec Bohm landing on the injured list with a fractured left rib. Suarez is in the midst of what is arguably his best season thus far. He has produced a .249/.321/.587 batting line in 421 plate appearances entering Saturday with 36 homers and a major league-leading 87 RBI. Suarez would be more than just another powerful bat in the lineup. Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber and first baseman Bryce Harper are both left-handed hitters — adding Suarez would provide more balance in the batting order. He would also provide a counter against opposing managers bringing in a lefty reliever to face Schwarber and Harper. The biggest question would be how the Phillies would handle an eventual logjam on the roster. Bohm is expected to return from the IL in mid-August and would not have a clear path to regular at-bats if Suarez were acquired. Schwarber could theoretically return to left field to open up playing time at the DH spot, but his outfield defense is mediocre at best. However, as the Phillies are also looking to upgrade the outfield, where Max Kepler and Brandon Marsh have been disappointments, adding Suarez could solve several problems in one fell swoop.
Former NBA MVP could be nearing the end of his career
For the past two seasons, Joel Embiid has been dealing with a knee issue. The former MVP underwent surgery in April to try to repair his meniscus, the second time he's received such surgery in the past 12 months. Embiid recently sat down for a tell-all interview with ESPN's Dotun Akintoye, where he detailed the struggles his body is currently going through. "We're not going to push anything," Embiid said. "For my whole career, I felt like we never took that approach ... We don't have a timeline. Hopefully, sooner rather than later ... It's all about the results ... If I come back early enough and I'm still not myself, guess what? You're not winning any games." Embiid's struggles have left the Sixers in a precarious situation. President of basketball operations Daryl Morey has built the entire roster around the star center's unique skill set. Philadelphia has constructed a team to go as far as Embiid can take it. It makes sense, then, that Embiid is just as frustrated with his injury-induced absences as the rest of the Sixers fanbase. In a July 27 appearance on Sirius XM Radio, Sixers beat writer Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer shared a unique take on the big man's recent interview and the messaging he's been putting out recently. "I think Joel may know that the end is near, and this is just me saying, and it's kind of like explaining to people what he's been going through," Pompey said. "Because rarely do you have a guy tell you how much pain (they're in) and how much they're going through. The thing I took from it was no matter who is there, the culture is the same. And I feel like Joel Embiid knows that it may not be this season, but the end is near. Maybe he feels as though he can't play to the level he used to. I could be wrong. He could come out and have another MVP season. But that was my takeaway." Embiid is probably one more lost season away from making such a difficult decision. He's only suited up for 58 games over the past two seasons, 39 in 2023-24 and 19 in 2024-25. Embiid doesn't project as the sort of player who would accept a decline while still cashing enormous checks that limit his team's ability to compete. The problem for Embiid is that injuries are only half the battle. Even when healthy, conditioning has been his Achilles heel. So, not only would he need to stay injury-free, both with his knee and his back, but he would also need to get into the best shape of his life. Anything less, and the Sixers could be doomed to repeat their failures of the past. Embiid is still working his way through a long road of recovery. However, he may also be coming to terms that the NBA chapter of his life is on the final few pages, and that must be a daunting reality to face.
