GLENDALE – The biggest renuion in the NFL this offseason was 18-year veteran Calais Campbell returning to the Arizona Cardinals this offseason. After nearly a decade away from the team, Campbell returned for likely his final season and plans to not only help Arizona on the field but off it too.
Campbell is starting “Calais Comes Home: A Homecoming with Heart,” which will aim to help 9,000 people in Maricopa County battling homelessness. In a press release, Campbell will donate upwards 100K and will donate more throughout the season for various stats tallied during his farewell tour.
“Coming back to Arizona feels like coming home, and I want to help others find their way home, too,” Campbell said. “This community embraced me when I started my NFL career, and now I have the opportunity to give back in a meaningful way. Every tackle, every sack, every win becomes a chance to change lives and bring another family closer to feeling safe and at home.”
The programs that will benefit from the initiative are UMOM New Day Centers, Family Promise, AZCEND, Gilbert Advocacy Center, Tempe Community Action Agency, One Small Step, Paz de Cristo and Sout Pointe Elementary School. A monetary amount will be donated for each of the following achievements: $2000 for a Cardinals’ win, $2,000 for every Campbell tackle for loss, $5,000 for a Campbell fumble recovery and $10,000 for a Campbell interception or blocked kick.
For example, last year with the Dolphins, Campbell would’ve donated an additional $40,000 to the homeless non-profits. The 39-year-old has had 12 seasons of 10+ tackles, which will lead to much needed funding to the Phoenix community.
