Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray missed a third straight game due to a lingering foot injury when the Cardinals played at the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.
Journeyman backup Jacoby Brissett started in Murray's place and guided Arizona to a 27-17 victory, the club's first win since Week 2 of the season, which improved it to 3-5. Following that result, Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon addressed whether or not his team is facing a quarterback controversy in early November.
"Nothing’s changed on that," Gannon said about Murray remaining Arizona's QB1 when healthy, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk and Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. "That’s how I feel."
Gannon later insisted that he had "nothing to add" regarding the situation. He also said that Murray "just wasn't healthy enough to go" at Dallas' AT&T Stadium.
Ahead of the "Monday Night Football" game, a report suggested that Murray and the Cardinals could be headed "toward an offseason divorce" that may become official in March 2026. Brissett then completed 21-of-31 passes for 261 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the win over the Cowboys. He also rushed for a score.
Meanwhile, Pro Football Reference stats show that Murray will enter Week 10 of the season ranked 25th in the NFL among qualified players with a 44.4 adjusted QBR and 22nd with an 88.6 passer rating.
Gannon may ultimately have to rethink his call if he learns that members of the locker room have more faith in Brissett than Murray coming off the Week 9 win.
"You can't say enough good things about what Jacoby's doing right now," Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell told NFL Network's Omar Ruiz after Monday's victory, as shared by NFL Media's Grant Gordon. "He's playing so good for us. He locks in. He's just doing what's required. You lose your starting quarterback, it's hard in the NFL to win ballgames. But for Jacoby to step in there and we don't miss a beat, it's been great for us. He's been incredible."
As of Tuesday morning, it was unknown if Murray will be cleared to start Arizona's matchup at the Seattle Seahawks (6-2) this coming Sunday afternoon. At that same time, ESPN BET had the Cardinals as 6.5-point road underdogs for the Seattle contest. One wonders how the line will change, if at all, once Gannon reveals the identity of his starting signal-caller for that game.
