Cardinals HC Kliff Kingsbury: Our long-term goal is to have Kyler Murray be our quarterback

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray sparked drama last month when he scrubbed his social media accounts of any mention of the Cardinals and unfollowed the team, but the first-overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft then seemed to commit his immediate future to the franchise via an Instagram post shared on Feb. 14.

However, the story took an interesting turn Monday when Erik Burkhardt, Murray's agent, released a lengthy statement and said the signal-caller wants a long-term relationship with the Cardinals and deserves a lucrative contract extension from the club. According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters Tuesday he didn't know Burkhardt's statement would be released Monday and also hasn't spoken to Murray since it went public. Kingsbury added his relationship with the 24-year-old is in "a great place" and that the two speak often.

"All our long-term goal here is to have Kyler be our quarterback. He understands that and he understands my view of him, how I feel about him," Kingsbury explained. "I’m gonna refer it back to the business side of things and that’s not something that I deal with. It’s all part of the business right now and things we’ll continue to work through."

According to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN, Murray is set to earn roughly $5.4 million, total, for the 2022 season and, thus, doesn't want to wait to be paid what he feels a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback deserves. Weinfuss also noted that Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said during a radio interview with Arizona Sports 98.7 this past Friday he and Murray have "had good conversations nonstop" but that putting pen to paper on a contract extension with a quarterback is "a complicated process and it takes some time."
