Cardinals Place G Chase Bisontis On IR

Because Arizona took this route with IR and did not wait until after this month’s roster-setting deadline, Bisontis is out for the season. Had the Cards carried Bisontis on their roster through August 30 before placing him on IR after that point, he would have been eligible to return. But the rookie guard’s earliest debut point will be Week 1 of the 2027 season after this transaction.

This is familiar territory for the Cardinals, who placed 2025 first-round pick Walter Nolen on the reserve/PUP list to start last season. Nolen did not debut until Week 9; he then finished the season on IR due to a different injury. Darius Robinson, chosen in the 2024 first round, also missed 11 games as a rookie. The Cardinals also lost fourth-round rookie D-lineman Kaleb Proctor for the season earlier this summer (Proctor landed on IR in July). This is a bad break for the Cardinals, who used a premium pick (No. 34 overall) on Bisontis in April.

Teams are allotted two IR-return slots at the August roster-setting deadline, but Bisontis is no longer eligible for one of those. He has undergone surgery and will target a September 2027 debut after this turn of events. Bisontis became the earliest interior O-lineman the Cardinals had drafted since they chose Jonathan Cooper seventh overall in 2013.

Depending on how Francis Mauigoa — who will convert from tackle to guard to start his Giants career — is categorized, Bisontis was either the second or third guard chosen in this year’s draft. The Ravens chose Penn State guard Vega Ioane at No. 14, and it took 20 more picks for another to come off the board. Bisontis played both right tackle and left guard with Texas A&M, starting at RT as a freshman before kicking inside. He did not allow a sack last season, and the No. 34 overall draft slot now comes with a fully guaranteed contract.

Bisontis entered Thursday’s game listed behind Isaiah Adams at right guard. While the RG position seemed like the quickest route to a starting role for the ex-SEC blocker, the injury will entrench Adams opposite free agency addition Isaac Seumalo at guard. Adams started 11 games last season, and Pro Football Focus ranked him 51st among guard regulars. Hjalte Froholdt remains the team’s center.
