The Carolina Panthers are in an interesting time as a franchise and it's split a lot of the fanbase, even if the team is finally making the right decisions.
This team needed to fully embrace the rebuild process under the rookie window with quarterback Bryce Young, which meant moving on from some franchise legends.
Back in February, the Panthers bit the toughest bullet by electing not to re-sign linebacker Shaq Thompson, one of the longest tenured players on the roster and a long-time locker room leader.
"We appreciate Shaq's leadership and dedication over the past 10 seasons," general manager Dan Morgan said when the decision was made. "Always a source of passion and enthusiasm, he was committed to this organization on and off the field, poured into his teammates, and strived to bring out the best in them. We wish Shaq the best as he moves forward with his career."
While it was a tough decision to make from a fan standpoint, it was a sound decision from a football standpoint. Thompson turned 31-years-old in April and only played six games over the last two seasons for the Panthers due to a broken fibula and an Achilles tear.
At this point in his career, it wasn't best for him to be a part of another full-blown rebuild process in Carolina. Thompson has only a few years left of quality play to chase a Super Bowl, and on Tuesday he finally landed in the best situation.
On Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills announced the signing of Thompson to a one-year deal, on the same day the team kicked off mandatory minicamp.
Thompson will reunite with head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane, who each previously worked in Carolina as the defensive coordinator and director of football operations.
Soon after the signing was announced, McDermott met with reporters and noted Thompson will be "limited at best" during minicamp considering he's still working back from his latest surgery.
Bills RB James Cook will practice today at mandatory minicamp despite wanting new deal, per HC Sean McDermott: “Really appreciate him being here… business is business. is .”

McDermott said LB Shaq Thompson will be limited at best in minicamp noting he’s coming off surgery.
Playing in a familiar scheme alongside Terell Bernard and Matt Milano will be a perfect environment for Thompson to help make a difference, while not being asked to be one of the top guys on defense. As an AFC juggernaut looking to get over the hump in the playoffs, this kind of veteran signing makes sense for both sides.
It's great to see Thompson land on his feet, for at least the 2025 season, and chase his first ring with the Bills.
The Panthers drafted Thompson in the first-round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He currently ranks fourth in franchise history with 470 solo tackles. While he never reached a Pro Bowl or All-Pro selection, he performed at a consistently high level for the Panthers defense over the course of a decade. He will always be remembered as a franchise great.
