Wentz, acquired in a blockbuster offseason trade, suffered a foot injury on July 29 at practice. The team initially hoped he could rest the foot and avoid undergoing surgery. But after further consultation, a difficult decision was made.
Breaking: Frank Reich says Carson Wentz had an old foot injury dating back to perhaps high school according to doctors. Over time, the broken bone came loose and caused pain. The decision has been made to undergo surgery and remove it. 5-12 weeks.— Stephen Holder (@HolderStephen) August 2, 2021
Indianapolis signed Brett Hundley over the weekend to provide depth at quarterback during Wentz’s absence. With the franchise now aware of the full extent of the injury, it will likely explore an upgrade at quarterback over Hundley and Jacob Eason.
Even if Wentz returns within four-to-six weeks, his absence in training camp will be felt. After struggling with confidence and a lack of chemistry with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, concerns about those issues returning are amplified by the missed practice time.
