Carson Wentz to undergo foot surgery, could miss 12 weeks

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz will undergo foot surgery, a procedure that may sideline him for a significant portion of the 2021 NFL season.

Wentz, acquired in a blockbuster offseason trade, suffered a foot injury on July 29 at practice. The team initially hoped he could rest the foot and avoid undergoing surgery. But after further consultation, a difficult decision was made.

On Monday, head coach Frank Reich announced that Wentz will undergo surgery. It will sideline him for the start of the Colts’ 2021 schedule and might cost him upwards of 12 weeks.

Indianapolis signed Brett Hundley over the weekend to provide depth at quarterback during Wentz’s absence. With the franchise now aware of the full extent of the injury, it will likely explore an upgrade at quarterback over Hundley and Jacob Eason.

Even if Wentz returns within four-to-six weeks, his absence in training camp will be felt. After struggling with confidence and a lack of chemistry with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, concerns about those issues returning are amplified by the missed practice time.
