Veteran cornerback Arthur Maulet has seen his usage decline over the past two years, and after remaining a free agent this far into 2026, he has opted to retire, per ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe. After short stints with six different teams over nine years, Maulet will hang up his cleats.

Maulet’s journey to the NFL was an unsure one from the start. The New Orleans native began his collegiate career at the JuCo level, attending Copiah-Lincoln Community College. After two years playing for the Wolves, he committed to Memphis. He impressed in his first year with the Tigers, returning two interceptions for 71 yards and a touchdown and logging seven passes defensed. He filled out the stat sheet as a senior, tallying two more picks, 13 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks.

Despite the display of play-making potential, Maulet went undrafted in 2017, but he was able to land a free agent contract with his hometown Saints, failing to make the 53-man roster as a rookie but landing on the practice squad. It took a bit for Maulet to find his footing in the NFL. He appeared in only six games in his rookie year and was waived one game into his sophomore season. He was claimed off waivers by the Jets and played in five games — including his first career start — before getting waived again.

At the end of his second season, Maulet signed a reserve/futures deal with the Jets. In New York, Maulet began to make a name for himself as a key rotational piece in the secondary. In two years with the Jets, Maulet started 11 of 23 games with two interceptions, seven passes defensed, five tackles for loss, and a sack. He also scored his first career touchdown after recovering a fumble in punt coverage.

Maulet signed a one-year deal to join the Steelers in 2021 and was inked to a two-year extension following his first season in Pittsburgh. In black and yellow, he started eight of 33 games played with an interception, four passes defensed, seven tackles for loss, and two sacks. After getting released before the second year of his extension, Maulet rebounded by signing with the rival Ravens in 2023. Starting three of 14 game appearances, Maulet matched all his career highs in Baltimore with a pick, five passes defensed, five tackles for loss, and two sacks while adding a new high with two fumble recoveries.

Baltimore also signed Maulet to a two-year extension, but a knee injury landed him on injured reserve to kick off his new deal. He was activated in mid October, but knee and calf injuries had him back on IR a month later. The Ravens released him in the following offseason, and after spending the summer with the Texans and failing to make the 53-man roster, Maulet eventually landed on the Lions’ practice squad in 2025. Thanks to a number of injuries in the secondary, Maulet got promoted to the active roster and played in nine more games last year, nabbing his fifth and last interception.

Despite his productive senior season at Memphis, Maulet never proved to be a star playmaker at the NFL level, but as an undrafted former JuCo prospect, he produced an impressive NFL career with longevity and utility, earning playing time on some of the NFL’s best defenses in the AFC North. He lasted nine seasons on one- to two-year stints, showing the true mark of a reliable role player.
