The 49ers made headlines yesterday when they moved to reacquire their seventh overall pick from the 2016 NFL Draft — defensive tackle DeForest Buckner — from the Colts. In order to add Buckner to the 53-man roster, though, San Francisco needed to clear a spot, and according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, the team opted to send veteran cornerback Jack Jones to free agency.
Initially a fourth-round pick for the Patriots, Jones impressed as a rookie. In a crowded cornerbacks room that included Jonathan Jones, Jalen Mills, and Marcus Jones, Jack started two of 13 games appearances, logged six passes defensed, and logged one of the team’s seven defensive touchdowns with a 40-yard pick six off the arm of Aaron Rodgers. His second year with the team, Jones looked to open the year as a starter, but his career seemed to derail in a series of events that started with a hamstring injury.
Before he could open his sophomore season as a starter, Jones was placed on IR the day before the team’s season opener. After missing the first six weeks of the season, Jones finally made his way back to the field. They eased him back into things playing him off the bench for two games with plenty of snaps, but a missed curfew forced the Patriots to take disciplinary action. Jones saw his playing time begin to diminish further before New England opted to part ways with the talented second-year player.
Jones was claimed off the waiver wire by the Raiders, and he quickly began to show the promise from his rookie season as he got comfortable in Las Vegas, returning two touchdowns for interceptions before year end. In 2024, Jones got his first opportunity to start full-time. He logged career highs in interceptions (3) and passes defensed (16), and one of those interceptions became his fourth career pick six. For as many plays as he made, though, he gave some up to the offense, as well, and the Raiders cut him for the second time in his three years of play at that point.
Last year, Jones started every game for the Dolphins, but he struggled to show the defensive prowess demonstrated in his first two years, though he did grab his eighth career interception. As a free agent, Jones signed a one-year deal with the 49ers. Seven weeks into the season, though, Jones has barely seen the field as Renardo Green and Deommodore Lenoir have dominated snaps at outside corner.
Jones will head to free agency for the fourth time in five years. Based on his recent history, though, he’s likely to land another opportunity with a franchise looking to add depth to their secondary.
