The Philadelphia Eagles’ blowout win over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl was even more impressive when you consider this stat: After cut-down day, the Eagles entered the 2024 season with the sixth-youngest roster in the NFL.

Philly has only moved closer to the top of that list after saying goodbye to a number of veteran players this offseason. The unique blend of youth and battle-tested talent on the current roster has expectations at an all-time high — as in, h ow many Super Bowls can this team win over the next five years?

Repeat champions, of course, are rare in the NFL, whose format stacks the deck against super teams and promotes parity. The Chiefs (2023-24) were the last team to do it, but you’d have to go back decades to find the next teams on the list, like the Patriots (2003-04) and Broncos (1999-2000). Only nine teams in NFL history have achieved this feat, and only the Pittsburgh Steelers have done it multiple times (1974-75, 1978-79).

Philly’s wild 2025 schedule adds another degree of difficulty to its repeat hopes. With that in mind, CBS Sports is projecting a slow start for the Eagles for the second consecutive year.

NFL analyst John Breech has Eagles going down early in 2025 season

Again, the NFL’s schedule makers did the Eagles no favors. After an NFC East battle to kick-off the season at home against the Cowboys, Philly gets a Super Bowl rematch with Kansas City (road), a playoff rematch with the Los Angeles Rams (home), and then back-to-back games against two more 2024 playoff teams in Tampa Bay (road) and Denver (home).

That’s about as tough as it gets over the first month of the year, and CBS Sports analyst John Breech decided to go bold — predicting the Eagles’ first loss to come in Week 2:

“After getting embarrassed in Super Bowl LIX, the Chiefs are going to be out for revenge.”

Arrowhead Stadium will definitely be charged up when the Eagles arrive in Kansas City on Sept. 14. Philly travels well, though, thanks to its dominant rushing attack and relentless defense.

Ideally, this rematch would come later in the season for Philadelphia. The Eagles have some major question marks in the secondary right now at both cornerback and safety, and the EDGE depth beyond starters Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt thins out in a hurry. If things remain as unsettled in Week 2 of the regular season as they’ve been during training camp, the Eagles will have their hands full against Mahomes, Andy Reid and company, especially on the road.

With all that said, the Eagles were a matchup nightmare for Kansas City in Super Bowl LIX, and the Chiefs have their own early-season questions to answer, from their rookie left tackle, to top receiver Rashee Rice’s return from last year’s season-ending knee injury.

This one could obviously go either way, but it would be a surprise to see the Eagles struggle out of the gate after last year’s dominant run. Folks can doubt the best top-to-bottom roster in football at their own risk.
