CBS' Tony Romo again responds to criticisms of NFL broadcasts

CBS lead NFL analyst Tony Romo is still offering no apologies after he was routinely criticized for his work during the 2022 season.

"I think that’s normal," Romo told Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News about being a target of fans and media members, alike. "I think that happens to anybody. Anytime you’re doing something well, I think there’s always going to be that. It’s just the arc type of someone’s career. It’s happened to me a few times before and that’s a good thing."

Romo and CBS agreed to a 10-year contract back in 2020 that reportedly pays the former Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback $17.5M per season. While Romo was once widely viewed as the top NFL analyst on network television, he more recently was blasted for his performances throughout this past postseason tournament and January's AFC Championship Game.

After it was reported in February that CBS management "tried an intervention last offseason" to have Romo "be better prepared" for assignments, he somewhat defiantly said that "you can’t please everyone." He repeated that take on Thursday.

"Really once you play quarterback for the Cowboys you can deal with anything," Romo continued. "You’ve got to remember there’s always someone’s opinion there. But 100 other people that come up to you and tell you they love you. You’re not going to please everyone. I do think at the end of the day, there’s a lot more people that really appreciate what we do and I think CBS does a great job with their broadcast team."

Broadcasting legend Jim Nantz, Romo's CBS partner, insisted last week that "there’s an agenda" regarding people questioning the duo's chemistry. Nantz added that he routinely hears from fans who supposedly "love the team" and "love Tony."

Nevertheless, CBS may begin hoping that radio host Colin Cowherd is right about Romo allegedly wanting to be on the PGA Tour if the retired signal-caller continues to receive negative reviews throughout this coming fall.
