There's a new sheriff in town for the Miami Dolphins' football operation this season. Champ Kelly serves as Miami's interim general manager and hopes to facilitate some valuable personnel moves in the coming days to help set Miami's next build up with extra resources. Kelly's tenure is off to an interesting start, with reports all weekend fueling speculation around a potential series of trades ranging from pass rushers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb to a reported renewed interest in hearing out offers for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
This season is over, sadly. But for Kelly, the work is just beginning. His window of time to make the biggest splash is short. He is, thankfully, experienced in such matters. This is his second interim general manager opportunity of the last three years. Here's what you need to know about his first.
Kelly was named the Las Vegas Raiders' interim GM on November 1, 2023. He held the position until January 23, 2024. It was at that point that he ceded control of the operation to new GM Tom Telesco, staying on for another year as the assistant general manager.
Kelly's first trade deadline opportunity as an interim general manager was non-existent. The Raiders only named Kelly to the post one day after the 2023 NFL trade deadline had passed on October 31st. In that sense, Miami's decision is a step in the right direction to give Kelly an opportunity to try to conduct some business.
It's worth noting, however, that this first opportunity to make decisions in such a role marks a new chance at a first impression for Kelly, who aspires to be named a general manager some day without the interim tag attached to it. Don't look for Kelly to be giving away players like leftover Halloween candy. This is his first big chance to run an information campaign and show what he can do. Discount selling won't help him and his resume.
Without a trade deadline to execute in Las Vegas, Kelly was forced to churn the practice squad and the bottom of the roster to execute personnel moves during his tenure with the Raiders. Ironically enough, he did post a meaningful addition via waiver claim. Kelly was the one who brought current Dolphins cornerback Jack Jones to the Raiders after he was waived by New England.
Jones went on to be a productive starter for the Raiders.
Miami should have a similar mindset in the weeks ahead. There's a lot of focus on their opportunities to trade talent away via the deadline but getting some stones turned over via waiver claims to land some young talent could and should be a focus for Kelly and his group as well. Hammer the pro scouting side of things. Churn the bottom of the roster. And see where the cards fall.
Kelly found a way to make an impact transaction in Las Vegas without the benefit of a trade deadline to execute. Let's hope he can bring the same, plus more action in the next few days to make the most of his newest audition for the league.
