Chargers Encouraged to Make Move for Washington WR Terry McLaurin Ahead of 2025 Season

Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers have worked hard to build a roster around quarterback Justin Herbert over the past couple of years, doing so with grit and toughness. The offensive line has been built up, and the rushing attack has been bolstered, both things done with hopes of lightening the load for Herbert, the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Going forward, though, the talent out wide at the receiver position could use some work.

The Chargers struck gold with Ladd McConkey a year ago in the draft, and they added veteran pass-catcher Mike Williams to the squad this year in free agency as well. However, with Williams nursing an injury to start the year, Herbert could use some additional help at the WR position.

If Harbaugh is aggressive, he could go out and get it before training camp.

At least that is what NFL reporter Cody Benjamin suggests, encouraging Los Angeles to go out and try to complete a trade with the Washington Commanders for All-Pro receiver Terry McLaurin, who is currently in an open contract dispute with the team. McLaurin publicly stated his frustration earlier this week, and while Washington is unlikely to cut ties with the multi-time Pro-Bowler, it would behoove the Chargers to kick the tires on a potential deal.

"What better way to finish constructing a firm infrastructure for Justin Herbert than by reeling in a legitimate field-stretcher to pair with route-running extraordinaire Ladd McConkey, especially with Mike Williams nursing an injury?" Benjamin writes. "The Chargers still have $27 million in remaining cap space going into 2025."

Outside of McConkey and Williams, there are some question marks for the Chargers out wide. Quentin Johnson has shown flashes of being a solid option, and there are high hopes for rookie Tre Harris, though he is yet to sign his rookie contract. Adding someone with the pedigree of McLaurin could be beneficial, even this late in the off-season.

Is it likely to happen? Probably not, as the Commanders would be making a risky move in getting rid of Jayden Daniels’ top pass-catcher right before the season. Should things play out in that way, though, the Chargers could be in a position to come up big.
