NFL teams are examining their rosters and salary cap situations before the new league year begins next month. For the Los Angeles Chargers, that appears to include considering cutting five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa.
ESPN's Dan Graziano reported on Wednesday morning that his sources believe cutting Bosa is "the likely outcome." He did however qualify that report in saying that the same thing was believed to be true a year ago before the two sides agreed to a two-year deal.
Graziano explained that Bosa is set to make $25.36 million next season, $12.36 million of which comes in the form of a roster bonus due next month. None of the 2025 money is guaranteed, but the Chargers have a decision to make before the roster bonus comes due.
Bosa has been limited to just 28 games over the past three seasons due to injury, and despite playing 14 games in 2024, he produced just 5.0 sacks, the second lowest tally in his nine seasons in the NFL. The only time Bosa produced fewer came in 2022 when he played only five games. Bosa turns 30 years old in July.
The Chargers also have a decision to make on fellow defensive end Khalil Mack who is a free agent this season. Mack had 6.0 sacks last season after recording a career-best 17.0 in 2023. The nine-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-Pro selection and the 2016 AP Defensive Player of the Year turns 34 years old this month.
