Chargers’ Justin Herbert recalls panicking after brutal $40,000 prank

“At the time, I had money saved up in this small community credit union in Eugene, and I never used my credit card, never used my debit card that was associated [with] my earnings — it was what I saved up from college. And so, I was like, ‘I can’t pay for this dinner, you guys. I don’t have it. I’m so sorry.’

“And then I was panicking for a little bit, and then they ended up bringing out the normal receipt that wasn’t nearly as bad. It was still bad, but not that bad. So, that was a good learning moment,” he continued.

With seven years of hindsight, Herbert can look back fondly. He said, “It makes it more fun knowing that they would never drive up the price like that and purposely harm someone.”

According to Spotrac, Herbert has earned over $150 million in his six years in the league. He signed a fully guaranteed four-year, $26,578,755 contract after being drafted.

Then, during the 2023 offseason, he signed a five-year, $262.5 million contract extension ($218,738,376 guaranteed). The contract will keep him in Los Angeles through the 2029 season. If he fulfills his entire contract, he will have made $289,078755 throughout his career, not counting any other potential extensions he signs.

Throughout his career, Herbert has led the Chargers to three playoff appearances. However, they have not won any of those games. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, though.
