It is no secret that the Los Angeles Chargers are in need of offensive weapons for quarterback Justin Herbert.
In the latest mock draft from Mel Kiper, he has the Chargers doing just that with the No. 22 overall pick. Kiper predicts that the Chargers will select wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan of Arizona.
McMillan offers tremendous upside for the Chargers, who are in need of a down field weapon. His 6-foot-5, 212 pound frame gives him the ability to win contested catches and display excellent body control while coming down with the ball. McMillan has the ability to play as an X-receiver and slot option, while displaying an assortment of routes despite his position on the field. Additionally, his awareness for finding soft spots in the defense when a play breaks down makes him a constant threat while on the field.
Despite his many strengths, McMillan possesses some downsides to his game. He will need to work on his speed and explosiveness off the ball. If he can release off the line faster, then he will become an elite receiver to create separation and be a threat at all three levels. Furthermore, he will need to increase his physicality with the ball in his hands to create more yards after the catch.
While at Arizona, McMillan set the program record for career receiving yards (3,423). Additionally, he finished third all-time in program history with touchdown receptions (26) and fourth in receptions (213). To open the 2024 season, McMillan set a single game program record with 304 receiving yards against New Mexico to go along with 10 receptions. He finished the 2024 season with 84 catches, 1,319 yards and eight touchdowns, which earned him First-Team All-Big 12 honors and was a Biletnikoff Award Finalist.
If the Chargers are able to draft McMillan, who is ranked as the No. 3 overall draft prospect by Pro Football Focus, then he could make an immediate impact for the offense. Ladd McConkey and McMillan could become a great young duo and vital weapons for Herbert.
