Prepare to have your heartstrings tugged at, Chargers fans.

One of the franchise's all-time great players, Philip Rivers, last played for the organization in 2019 after taking over as the team's full-time starter in 2006. Rivers' career with the Chargers was outstanding — there was an AFC Championship Game appearance, 8 Pro Bowls, over 59,000 passing yards and nearly 400 passing touchdowns split between San Diego and Los Angeles.

But Rivers' career did not ultimately end with the Chargers. He would go on to play in 2020 with the Indianapolis Colts for one season before riding off into the sunset of retirement. That is, until today. Rivers and the team announced today that he is officially retiring as a Charger.

Philip Rivers officially retires as a Charger

Rivers ended his Chargers career holding over 30 franchise records and a massive 224 consecutive starts, per the team's official release announcing his retirement with the team today. Los Angeles has been blessed with some amazing eras of offensive football and the one headlined by Philip Rivers at quarterback deserves to be mentioned right at the top of the list.

There aren't many quarterbacks who could go on to have a career that would justify moving on from Drew Brees. Rivers did his best to prove the organization right from the very beginning.

The team's five minute video sharing the announcement is filled with awesome moments, including Rivers being re-united with four of his long-time protectors and offensive linemen to share in the moment with him. He was surprised by Nick Hardwick, Kris Dielman, Marcus McNeill and Jeromey Clary for the moment.

The Chargers are in the midst of their own training camp for the 2025 season, too. The team was among those who got an early jump on practices versus the rest of the league thanks to their presence in the 2025 Hall of Fame Game at the end of the month. Rivers and his old teammates will see another Chargers legend, tight end Antonio Gates, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2025.

Which means this announcement with Rivers won't be the only nostalgic pulling at the heartstrings of Chargers fans this summer. This is a good start and primer for what awaits fans of the team in Canton, Ohio.
