The Los Angeles Chargers are quietly heating up the trade market as they seek to bolster their running back room, with veteran Nick Chubb emerging as a potential target. With rookie Omarion Hampton now on injured reserve and Najee Harris sidelined with a season-ending Achilles injury, the Chargers face a thin backfield, leaving quarterback Justin Herbert with limited options. Bjorn Bergstrom of PFSN recently noted, “Chubb would fit the physical rushing attack that offensive coordinator Greg Roman covets. Though he may not be able to fulfill the bell-cow role that Hampton was shaping up to be, the combination of him, Harris, and fellow reserves Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins should be up to the job.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported that Los Angeles has been “calling teams for running back help, canvassing the league for either a depth piece or a starter, sources say.” The team has also evaluated talent through tryouts, signing Nyheim Miller-Hines among four running backs visiting the facility. High-profile names such as Alvin Kamara and Breece Hall have reportedly expressed a desire to stay put, leaving the Chargers to consider available veterans or emerging backs like Chubb.
Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?
Chubb, currently in his first season with the Houston Texans, has rushed for 188 yards on 4.0 yards per carry through four games. Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame suggested a conditional seventh-round pick could bring Chubb to Los Angeles. “He’d be the perfect low-cost addition for coordinator Greg Roman, who during his 11 years as a play-caller… has seen his team ranked in the top five seven times in rushing attempts,” Verderame wrote. The veteran could provide a physical presence between the tackles while mentoring Hampton and easing the workload of LA’s other young backs.
The Chargers’ active trade discussions come amid broader roster moves, including the acquisition of former first-round pass-rusher Odafe Oweh. With injuries limiting the team’s depth behind Hampton and Harris, Los Angeles is aggressively seeking reinforcements to maintain a competitive offense and protect Herbert.
If a deal for Chubb materializes, it would immediately address the Chargers’ backfield concerns while offering a low-risk, high-reward solution. For a team still chasing playoff aspirations, these Chargers trade rumors could be the move that ensures stability and continuity in the running game.
