Chicago Bears Could Make Surprising Cut Prior To 2024 NFL Season
Daniel Bartel-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears have put together an absolutely amazing all-around NFL offseason. After years of struggling to compete and being viewed as a bottom-feeder, fortunes seem to be turning in the Windy City.

Caleb Williams was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, signaling the start of a new era in Chicago. The Bears were then able to double down on the offensive side of the football with dynamic wide receiver Rome Odunze with the No. 9 overall pick. Both players are going to be massive playmakers for Chicago for years to come.

Add in the fact that the Bears have surrounded Williams and Odunze with talented playmakers like D’Andre Swift, Keenan Allen, and DJ Moore and the offensive potential is through the roof.

All of that being said, the Bears are not done making roster moves this offseason. They could end up making a surprising cut or two ahead of the 2024 regular season.

Chicago Bears Could Make One Surprising Cut Before Regular Season

Bear Goggles On, a Bears’ website, recently took a look at three potential roster cuts that the team could end up making. One of them was fan favorite quarterback Tyson Bagent, who performed admirably last season as the starter when Justin Fields went down with injury.

“Journeyman Brett Rypien and 2024 UDFA Austin Reed are Bagent’s competitors. Reed is friends with Caleb Williams which may help his case. With a strong summer showing, it’s not crazy to think the Bears could once again go with a UDFA as the primary backup. There’s also the potential that a veteran QB is added from the outside. Either way, Bagent is far from a lock.”

Bagent ended up playing in five games during the 2023 NFL season for the Chicago Bears. His numbers weren’t amazing, but he completed 65.7 percent of his pass attempts for 859 yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, he did throw six interceptions.

Despite his turnover issues, Bagent became an instant fan favorite and many thought he would be a great backup behind Williams. That could still be the case, but as the above snippet states, he’s far from a lock to make the roster.

At just 23 years of age, there is no question that Bagent has an NFL future. Whether it be with the Bears or another team, he’ll latch on as a backup somewhere. It’s also not a forgone conclusion that he won’t be on the roster with Chicago to start the 2024 season.

While this is something to keep an eye on, it will be interesting to see how all the backup quarterbacks for the Chicago Bears perform during the preseason and training camp periods. Bagent is absolutely on the roster bubble and there is a lot for him to play for in the coming months.
