Chicago Bears executive named potential Colts general manager target

The Chicago Bears lost former assistant general manager Ian Cunningham to the Atlanta Falcons prior to the 2026 campaign. Now, the franchise may need to prepare for a bit of deja vu.

After losing to the Tennessee Titans and falling to 2-4, the Indianapolis Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard. They are now expected to undergo a wide-ranging search for their next decision maker.

The Bears are the reigning NFC North champions. They have found their quarterback in Caleb Williams. Head coach Ben Johnson has revolutionized the offense. Of course, it’ll be difficult to simply replicate what Chicago has built. But it’s easy to see why opposing teams would be interested in Bears executives.

Indianapolis will have plenty of names on their list when trying to find their next GM. Towards the top could be a key current voice in the Bears front office.

Colts could target Chicago Bears’ Jeff King for next GM

Jeff King has been with the Bears since 2015, initially beginning his tenure as a scouting intern. Since then, he has only risen the ranks, filling numerous roles in the organization. King was the senior director of player personnel from 2024-25. And after Cunningham’s departure, he was promoted to assistant general manager.

King’s background in scouting may be of interest to the Colts. How the Bears operate as an organization will intrigue anyone with an opening, via Jourdan Rodrigue of the Athletic.

“First, the Bears found their quarterback. Then (after some bumps), they found their head coach,” Rodrigue wrote. “Now, their organization has seemingly completely rewritten its story with the same general manager and largely the same executive staff intact, minus Cunningham, who left for the Atlanta Falcons in January. That turnaround may be of interest to Irsay-Gordon, as could its integral figures, like King — a longtime scout and executive who has worked in just about every front-office department.”

The Colts are still figuring out how they will approach the GM search. While they may have some initial targets, a final list hasn’t been completed so close to Ballard’s firing.

Still, King’s incusion as a potential target is telling. Even if the Colts job comes and goes, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the executive’s name continue to come up in GM searches should the Bears keep winning.
