The Chicago Bears have been working with Braxton Jones, Jedrick Wills Jr. and Kiran Amegadjie at left tackle during training camp after Ozzy Trapilo tore his patellar tendon in the team’s Wild-Card Round win in overtime over the Green Bay Packers.

Because of the timing and severity of the injury, the initial belief was that Trapilo could miss most or all of the regular season as he recovers. The Bears brought back Jones and signed Wills, a 2020 first-round pick, to a one-year contract as insurance at left tackle.

NFL insider Albert Breer provided an update on the situation with Trapilo. The Bears might get a curveball on the 2025 second-round pick’s health. Breer thinks he could be back earlier than initially thought.

“There’s a lot less certainty opposite Wright, where Braxton Jones, Jedrick Wills and Kiran Amegadjie are duking it out to start at left tackle,” Breer posted on X. Both Jones and Wills have been healthy, which is a plus. But with Jones out Sunday, Amegadjie took the reps with the starters.

“And it looks like Ozzy Trapilo, who started six regular-season games at left tackle, then tore his patellar tendon in the wild-card round, might be back sooner than expected.”

Having a healthy Trapilo back for the regular season would be a boost to an offensive line that already had to deal with a surprise early in the offseason when Drew Dalman announced his retirement.

The Bears are expected to start Garrett Bradbury at center until second-round pick Logan Jones is ready.

Trapilo had a solid effort in his rookie season. Per Pro Football Focus, he was graded 37th out of all offensive tackles in the league.

By the time Trapilo is able to return, the Bears will likely have some sort of injury to deal with on the offensive line. Having depth up front would be a luxury near the playoffs.
