Chicago Bears’ Jonah Jackson dealt murky injury update

While the Chicago Bears picked up a 31-23 victory against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6, right guard Jonah Jackson was forced to leave the game with a hip injury. Now, the Bears have a better idea of what Jackson is dealing with.

The right guard seems doubtful for the Week 7 Thursday night matchup against the New England Patriots, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Jackson is considered week-to-week, but Chicago is optimistic he won’t be out long-term.

“Bears OG Jonah Jackson has a hip flexor injury and is considered week-to-week, per source,” Fowler wrote. “Status for TNF in doubt but shouldn’t be long term.”

The fact Jackson isn’t dealing with a long-term injury will have Chicago breathing a sigh of relief. But week-to-week leaves some ambiguity in the situation. If the Bears aren’t planning to place him on injured reserve, that would seemingly mean they don’t expect the guard to miss four+ games. But until Jackson can practice, it’s unknown when he will play during the regular season again.

Who plays right guard for Chicago Bears?

Even if Jackson misses just a week or two, the Bears will need to find a replacement whenever he isn’t on the field. Whoever is in that role will have big shoes to fill, as Jackson’s current 83.9 grade from Pro Football Focus ranks fifth/76 guards.

In Week 6, the Bears turned to Luke Newman when their right guard went down. The former sixth-round pick ended up playing 27 snaps. If not Newman, Chicago also has Jordan McFadden on their roster, who the coaching staff has spoke about glowingly. Barring an outside addition, either one of Newman or McFadden seems suited to start at least in Week 7.

The Bears’ immediate focus is on taking down the New England Patriots. But they’re also carefully watching Jackson and his recovery from injury. Chicago won’t risk a setback, but they want their standout guard back on the offensive line as soon as possible.
