Chiefs add Pro Bowl WR in CBS Sports ‘free agency mock draft’

With Juju Smith-Schuster set to become an unrestricted free agent, the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are likely in the market for another field-stretching receiver.

And as Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports explains in his free agency mock draft, that’s exactly why the Chiefs should pursue free agent Odell Beckham Jr., a three-time Pro Bowler who’s free to sign with a team whenever he wants.

“The rich get richer,” Benjamin said. “Beckham's market is unpredictable considering his injury history, but at full speed, he's still a legit weapon as a route-runner and downfield threat. K.C., meanwhile, may have something spicy in Kadarius Toney but can never have enough toys for Patrick Mahomes and Co., especially with JuJu Smith-Schuster heading elsewhere in this exercise.”

Beckham Jr. hasn’t played a down since Super Bowl LVI in February of 2022. He sat out this season while rehabbing a torn ACL, despite mid-season interest from several teams including the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers and New York Giants.

Although he hasn’t played in over a calendar year, the 30-year-old Beckham Jr. could still be a useful piece in Kansas City’s offense. He’s totaled 74 or more receptions in five of the six seasons he’s played double-digit games, including five 1,000-yard seasons.

With Smith-Schuster, Kansas City’s second-leading receiver behind tight end Travis Kelce, set to hit the open market, the Chiefs depth chart has a glaring hole at the top ahead of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney (Mecole Hardman and Justin Watson are also both free agents).

Mahomes spread the ball around to 15 different receivers in 2022, so there would be little pressure for Beckham Jr. to carry the offense.
