The Los Angeles Chargers stunned the Kansas City Chiefs on September 6 in São Paulo, Brazil. They broke a seven-game skid with a 27-21 victory built almost entirely through the air. Justin Herbert outdueled Patrick Mahomes, completing 25 of 34 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns. Third-year receiver Quentin Johnston delivered 79 yards and two scores.

On the same day, Hall of Famer Kurt Warner talked about the duo’s impact immediately after the game via X. Read his tweet below:

“I thought #JustinHerbert was tremendous tonight… not that I’m surprised bc we see a lot of these performances from him, but I didn’t think he made many mistakes tonight while dropping dimes all over the place! #QuentinJohnston stepped up big time… if he can be consistent like that all year, look out for the Chargers!”

The setting underscored the surprise. Brazil hosted an NFL opener for only the second time. Los Angeles arrived expecting to lean on a revamped run game, having drafted Omarion Hampton and signed Najee Harris. Instead, new additions Keenan Allen and Tyler Conklin fueled a pass-heavy approach.

Allen led with seven catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Johnston, though, supplied the decisive blows – a five-yard score in the first quarter and a 23-yard strike late in the fourth.

Herbert sealed the win with a 19-yard scramble on third-and-14, denying Patrick Mahomes another comeback shot. Los Angeles, now 1-0, travels to Las Vegas to face the Raiders on September 15.

Jim Harbaugh Hails Justin Herbert as Chargers Outshine Patrick Mahomes to End Kansas City Chiefs’ Streak

On September 6 in São Paulo, Justin Herbert ended the Chargers’ seven-game drought against KC. Head coach Jim Harbaugh framed the result as franchise history [ESPN].

It’s monumental. September 5th will go down in some Charger lore, in my opinion. It was a big win.”

Herbert connected with Quentin Johnston for touchdowns of five and 23 yards, extending the lead to 26-18 with 5:02 left. Herbert said,

We knew it was going to be a dogfight, so we showed up today with our best effort. It was fun to see.”

Patrick Mahomes finished 24-of-39 for 258 yards and one score but saw a late drive stall inside the LA 10. The Chiefs QB alluded,

This will be a big lesson for us. They definitely came out with more energy than we did. We got to get better from the start.”

Los Angeles heads to Las Vegas on September 15; Kansas City hosts Philadelphia September 14.
