Chiefs fan Nick Wright comes to the defense of Jalen Hurts (kind of)

The variety of different opinions on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts continues to dominate offseason conversations among the media.

Former NFL quarterback and now NBC NFL analyst Chris Simms has not been so kind in his thoughts on Hurts. In his recent quarterback rankings, Simms had Hurts ranked 10th. Guys ahead of Hurts include Baker Mayfield, C.J. Stroud, Matthew Stafford, and Justin Herbert.

An unusual moment occurred on FS1 where one of the commentators came to the defense of Hurts regarding his ranking. And it was from a well-known Kansas City Chiefs fan.

Nick Wright shares his thoughts on Hurts behind Herbert

During a segment on FS1's First Things First, Nick Wright had to question one aspect of Simms' quarterback rankings: how Herbert was ranked higher than Hurts. Wright pointed out what Simms is showing with his evaluation and how Herbert's playoff resume is being ignored.

"I'm going to pin point though one guy ahead of him. Having Jalen Hurts behind Justin Herbert, it's really one of those things where it tells me a lot about the evaluator and what they value and what they don't. Listen, I'm about to talk about here, I'm sure I'm guilty of. This is not an attack on Chris Simms, I promise. But it speaks to the massive ego of, I just know better than the five years of evidence and careers and 150 games played between them, doesn't matter as much as my eye. Because when one guy has not only been to two Super Bowls, but played really well in one and played great in the other and not to mention the NFC Championship game where they scored 50 and all of that stuff and the other guy's playoff resume is two of the most disappointing playoff performances of the last decade. The last of which came in a season where he had the number one defense in football and all Jim Harbaugh asked of him: don't turn the ball over and we'll be fine. In the playoff game, he had more interceptions than he had the entirety of the regular season combined. I just don’t know how you can say he's [Justin Herbert] is better than Jalen Hurts. That one ranking seems to me to be indefensible other than, ‘eh, I just know.’”

To remind the general public of how good Hurts is, he's been selected to two Pro Bowls, chosen as a second-team All-Pro, been to the postseason every year as a full-time starter, started in two Super Bowls, and has won a Super Bowl with the game's MVP. In those Super Bowls, he's thrown for 525 yards and scored seven total touchdowns.

Herbert doesn't nearly have the resume that Hurts has, since he hasn't even won a playoff game. As Wright pointed out, Herbert has folded in playoff games, which weren't all his fault, but his play didn't exactly elevate the team.

All offseason, there have been all kinds of opinions on Hurts, as it's either analysts love him or hate him. This is a man who was ripped apart for his turnovers and decision-making skills in 2023. Hurts fixed all that with a career-high passer rating of 103.7 and a completion percentage of 68.7 with only five interceptions thrown.

The only stats people see are yards and touchdowns, and believe that's what determines how good a quarterback is. Hurts has drastically improved his quarterback play, and adding his mobility only makes him more dangerous.

Another disappointing aspect is that, yes, Hurts should be ahead of Herbert, but he should also be ahead of half the players on Simms' rankings. It's another disrespectful take on Hurts from the media that will be used for bulletin board material in 2025.
