June is the worst month to generate headlines.
Fan bases all over the NFL are collectively holding their breath in the hopes of not hearing any player updates. The reason? The only things that happen in june are injuries and arrests. Yes, perhaps a star player or two will turn up on the golf course or at a charity event. But for the most part, early summer news about a player is inevitably bad news.
The Washington Commanders felt this on Wednesday.
Most NFL teams are going through their mandatory minicamps this week—with the Chiefs holding out until June 17-19—and that means roster updates, player drills, and media sessions. Headlines during these days might not be all bad, but unfortunately, wide receiver Noah Brown went down with a non-contact injury.
Brown's injury is not a concern for Chiefs Kingdom per se, other than wishing general good health to everyone, but it does stand as an important reminder that (largely) only bad things happen at this time of year.
The Chiefs are going to rely on their training staff during minicamp to make certain that players are taken care of. Those who need to be held out due to ongoing recovery efforts will remain on the sidelines. Therefore, no one should expect to see any potential re-aggravation of an injury that's already a concern.
What should scare Chiefs Kingdom is the idea of a random injury happening, such as what happened to Brown. It's the innocent drill that somehow goes awry. It's the odd way a receiver lands after going up for the 100th time, or the odd turn of an ankle on a daily drill that a running back could otherwise do in his sleep.
The problem is that there's no way of predicting or prohibiting such things from happening. Injuries will happen at some point. Some seasons feel more "cursed" by them than others. And it feels like every June brings at least one piece of bad news for most teams around the NFL.
As the Chiefs look ahead to their own mandatory minicamp, they can only hope to come out of each day relatively unscathed and that players remain on their best behavior when away from Arrowhead.
