Chiefs Get More Unwanted News Amid NFL Offseason

The Kansas City Chiefs had a miserable 2025 season. They finished with a 6-11 record for third in the AFC West and 12th in the conference. The Chiefs lost their last six games, en route to missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

On Monday, seven practice squad contracts expired for the Chiefs . This included former first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who won two Super Bowl titles with Kansas City.

Apart from Edwards-Helaire, defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu’s contract with the team also expired. The 26-year-old has now decided to move on from Kansas City after two years with the squad.

Tuipulotu is not a key player for the Chiefs. He spent most of his time with the team bouncing between the practice squad and the active roster. In two seasons in Kansas City, Tuipulotu played five games (with one start in 2024), registering five combined tackles (two solo) and one tackle for loss.

On Tuesday, news broke that Tuipulotu has agreed to sign with the New York Giants. The 26-year-old reportedly signed a reserves/futures contract with the Giants.

While losing Tuipulotu is not a landscape-shifting development for the Chiefs, the fact that they were not able to retain him is unwanted news for the team. Tuipulotu’s departure is minor on paper, but it quietly trims the Chiefs’ already-thin interior depth behind Chris Jones. Kansas City has lost a scheme-familiar DL for nothing, and they will now need to rely on draft picks and camp flyers to fill the void.

The Giants, on the other hand, get a low-risk depth investment in Tuipulotu. Their decision to sign him early in the offseason is an indication of the potential they see in the former USC Trojans standout.

This development comes after the Chiefs also lost running back Carson Steele. Similar to Tuipulotu’s case, Steele’s practice squad contract expired on Monday. The 23-year-old signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday.
