For 15 years, Kansas City Chiefs fans had the pleasure of watching Dustin Colquitt punt for them. While punters are usually not very popular due to what their presence on the field means (giving the ball back to the opposition because your team's offense struggled to make anything happen), Colquitt was adored during his time in Kansas City.
That's why it's absolutely fitting that he'd sign a one-day deal in Kansas City so that he can retire as a member of the Chiefs. The team announced this was happening on Wednesday and it's a move that makes perfect sense for Colquitt and the Chiefs considering how long he was with the team.
And, to be quite honest, for several years, Colquitt was far and away the best player on the team. He was with the Chiefs during some incredibly dark times and remained loyal to them. It was the perfect sendoff that he ended his Chiefs tenure with a Super Bowl victory, something he probably never thought would be possible when he punted for two 2-14 teams in a four-year span.
The Chiefs probably got hammered by the media for spending a third-round pick on a punter in 2005 but clearly, that ended up being the right decision. Not only did Colquitt spend the next 15 years of his career in Kansas City, but he was named to two Pro Bowls and, as mentioned, won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs during his last year in K.C.
The only blemish for Colquitt is that he didn't ride into the sunset after winning that championship. He spent two more years in the league bouncing around between four different teams (Steelers, Jaguars, Falcons, and Browns) and was out of the league after the 2021 season. He did briefly sign with the Chiefs' practice squad ahead of the 2021 postseason run, but people might not remember that.
No one will remember Colquitt for anything he did with those teams, however. He'll only be remembered -- not just by Chiefs fans -- for his time in Kansas City. It's awesome that he's getting this contract and will officially go out as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. Well deserved to one of the greats!
