Tyquan Thornton was a second-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2022 but his numbers with the Patriots definitely screamed 'bust'. The Baylor product's best year came during his rookie season in 2022 when he had 22 receptions for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He didn't come close to passing those numbers in his other two years with the Pats.
The Chiefs believed that Thornton might still have something left to prove and chose to keep him on their 53-man roster entering the regular season. That proved to be a wise decision considering all of the wide receiver woes that K.C. has been dealing with, including Rashee Rice's suspension, Jalen Royals' injury, and Xavier Worthy exiting the Week 1 game with an injury.
Thornton finished the game with two catches for 41 yards and in one game, nearly surpassed his entire yardage with the Patriots from a season ago (he had 47 yards in six games). Sure it was only one game but Thornton showed that in the right system, he can still contribute and the Chiefs gave him a chance to put that on display.
Thornton entered the league in 2022 as someone the Patriots hoped could ball out for their offense (which, at that time, was being led by quarterback Mac Jones and no offensive coordinator) but it was clear that he wasn't a right fit for that that offense. Now he's getting a chance to showcase why he was a second-round pick three years ago.
Hopefully the Chiefs wide receivers get healthy and can contribute so that Patrick Mahomes doesn't have to rely on Thornton as much. In the one regular season game we've seen him in action, however, he's looked decent. This is a great chance for him to hit the reset button and recapture that magic he had during his Baylor days and if he does that, both he and the Chiefs will benefit greatly.
